Museum of art from Saxony after 1945 in the Das Tietz cultural center in Chemnitz, run by the association Neue Chemnitzer Kunsthütte.

Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

On January 24, 1990, committed citizens founded the association Neue Chemnitzer Kunsthütte at the suggestion of art historian Werner Ballarin, probably the first art association in the then-GDR. It built on the Chemnitzer Kunsthütte founded in 1860, whose acquisitions once formed the basis of the municipal art collections. The former local Stasi headquarters became a place of free thought and creative work: the Neue Sächsische Galerie.

Since 1996 the association has been responsible for the house, which had previously been run as an independent municipal museum in close partnership with it. The museum sees itself as a museum of contemporary art and at the same time as an action space of the art association; it engages with the art scene in Saxony as well as with international positions.

The collection of art from Saxony after 1945 grew out of the holdings of the former Karl-Marx-Stadt district art center and today comprises just under 12,000 works. These include fine art, applied art and industrial design from the GDR period, as well as posters. Most works came to the house as gifts, transfers or through sponsorship. The museum is located on the second floor of the converted former Hermann Tietz department store, in the middle of Chemnitz's city center.
