Second part of the "Mahlzeit!" series: feminist positions, including Martha Rosler, on food, care work and gender roles.
November 27, 2026 – April 4, 2027
Final part of the series: the set table as a place of social order, rituals and traditions – from Schmidt-Rottluff and Kirchner to Daniel Spoerri and contemporary art.
The museum is based on the collection of Munich gallerist Alfred Gunzenhauser, which he entrusted to the city of Chemnitz. According to the Kunstsammlungen, it comprises more than 3,000 works by some 270 artists, with a focus on art around 1900, Expressionism, New Objectivity and 20th-century abstraction. Outstanding are the large holdings of works by Otto Dix as well as extensive groups of works by Alexej von Jawlensky and Gabriele Münter.
The museum occupies the former headquarters of the Sparkasse Chemnitz (savings bank), built from 1928 to 1930 to plans by city architect Fred Otto in the New Objectivity style. Staab Architekten converted it into a museum; the former banking hall with its daylight became an exhibition space. On December 1, 2007, the museum opened as the first collector's museum in the eastern German states.
The museum is part of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz but has its own admission prices. In addition to presenting the collection, it shows changing exhibitions – in 2026, for example, the three-part series "Mahlzeit!" on food in art. During these exhibitions, only a smaller selection from the Gunzenhauser collection is on view.
