About the museum
The museum is run by the Heimat- und Kulturverein Geismar (local heritage and culture association), founded in 1996 following the village's 800th anniversary celebration to preserve old customs. Since then the association has, among other things, put a restored loom from 1786 back into operation and can demonstrate the entire process from flax to finished linen, from sowing to cloth.
A second focus is mining, which produced copper and silver around Geismar from 1590 to 1818 and only paused during the Thirty Years' War. At its peak, around 180 miners worked there every day, three quarters of them from the village itself. True-to-scale models at a scale of 1:20, remains from the smelting furnaces, tools, fossils and ores make this history vivid; visitors can crawl through a replica mine tunnel with a miner's lamp.
Since 2014 the museum has been the starting point of the GeoPfad Geismar in the Geopark GrenzWelten. The association's grounds also include a herb garden and the village's bakehouse, where bread is regularly baked in the traditional way.
