About the museum
The museum was established in 1952 as the district local history museum in the north wing of the former St. Georgenberg Cistercian nunnery. The convent was founded in 1249 and dissolved after the Reformation; afterwards various offices used the buildings.
After a comprehensive redesign completed at the end of 2024, the cloister, refectory, dormitory and the Romanesque St. Mauritius Chapel tell the story of the town and the Frankenberg district.
Key focuses are the sculptors Philipp Soldan and Tyle von Frankenberg, with works from the Liebfrauenkirche, a folklore collection (including the oldest Blaudruck (blue resist-print textiles) in Hesse and the largest Stülpchen collection in the state), and fossils and prehistoric finds from the region.
