Closed until further notice due to the renewal of the concept and rooms, including expansion of the exhibition and renovation in line with historic preservation requirements; no opening date has been set yet. About the museum

Haina Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery in the Kellerwald, became a hospital during the Reformation: in 1533 Landgrave Philip of Hesse founded one of his state hospitals here. From it the later mental hospital and nursing home and today's clinics of Vitos Haina developed. The almost 500-year history of this site is documented by an extensive body of records in the Haina Archive, a branch of the archive of the Landeswohlfahrtsverband Hessen.

The Psychiatriemuseum opened in 1992, prompted by the public success of an anniversary exhibition on the monastery's history. It occupied the former monastic parlatory by the cloister walk, which at times also served as a patients' ward. Across four sections it displayed documents, objects and images on the treatment of people with mental illness from the early 16th century onward, including restraints and historical treatment devices.

The museum is currently closed: the rooms are being renovated in line with the requirements of historic preservation, and the exhibition is being redesigned and expanded. Under the title “500 Jahre Psychiatrie in Haina – Menschen, Räume, Geschichte(n)” it is to tell the history in eight periods from 1533 to the 21st century, using key objects, patient art, case files and personal accounts from patients, nursing staff and doctors. The historic Krautkeller (cabbage cellar) is also being opened up as a new exhibition space.
