About the museum

The Hummelstube goes back to Annemarie Leutzsch, known in the region as the "Rettl aus'm Hummelgau". In the 1960s she set up her collection in the former stable of her grandparents' house, the Ruckriegelhof in the Hummeltal district of Pittersdorf. The core of the collection came from the residents of the farm and was supplemented by pieces from the Hummelgau, the landscape southwest of Bayreuth.

In 2006 the municipality of Hummeltal acquired the collection and housed it in the so-called Zeckenhaus, a fully renovated residential and stable house from 1846. The staircase and room layout of the old sandstone house were largely preserved. Since June 2009 a newly prepared permanent exhibition has shown 19th-century furniture, farm work, childhood, food and historic regional clothing. One of the most important exhibits is the Tante-Emma-Laden from Gesees on the ground floor, which was in operation until 1984. A friends' association founded in 1993 supports the museum.
