About the museum
The Böhmisches Dorf in Berlin-Neukölln (Rixdorf) goes back to Protestant refugees from Bohemia, who were settled in Brandenburg-Prussia in 1737 at the invitation of the Prussian king. Their descendants still live in the area, and the settlement structure and church traditions have survived.
On September 18, 2005, the association "Museum im Böhmischen Dorf e. V." opened the museum in a two-room apartment on the ground floor of the listed former schoolhouse of the Böhmen, built in 1753/54. It first served as a prayer hall and school and from 1909 as a residence. The exhibition is designed by volunteer association members.
The displays cover the settlement history, religious life, crafts and education of the villagers. Most exhibits come from families in the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine: church costumes, bilingual Czech-German hymnals and Bibles, Herrnhut stars, souvenirs brought home by missionaries from South Africa and Suriname, and self-built physics demonstration equipment from the old Brethren school.
