About the museum
The Gerberhaus on the Gerbergasse dates from 1585 and is the oldest surviving residential and commercial building in the town. It is one of the few houses that survived the great town fire of 1689. Built against the former town wall, it served generations of tanners as their home and workplace.
In the mid-1980s it seemed the house would have to make way for a parking lot. On the initiative of the then mayor Paul Metzger and of traditionally minded citizens, demolition was prevented; between 1991 and 1994 volunteers renovated the building by their own labor.
Today it is a craft museum of the town of Bretten. It shows tools and implements of the tanning trade, examples of domestic culture from earlier times and the processing of leather; in addition there are a saddler's workshop and a shoemaker's workshop. At times there were also small special exhibitions. The house is currently closed and opens only for special events.
