About the museum
The Museum Prüm was founded in 1929 by Prüm district administrator (Landrat) Alexander Schlemmer together with government assessor Josef Schramm, and was initially set up in the basement of the former Benedictine abbey of St. Salvator. In 1944, almost all objects were lost during the war.
In 1966, grammar school teacher Franz Josef Faas founded a new local history museum and led it until 2012. The aim was again a cultural-historical collection for the Prüm area, which over time grew well beyond the region. In 1973 the museum reopened in the town hall; in 1987 it moved to Tiergartenstraße, where it has been housed in the complex of the Verbandsgemeinde Prüm ever since.
The permanent exhibition covers more than 12,000 exhibits across about 1,300 square meters and four floors, spanning roughly 1700 to 1960. Individual rooms, corridors and the stairwell show rural life, dress codes and fashion, home furnishings, craftsmen and service trades, children's play worlds, religious folk culture, and the history of Prüm.
