Besucherbergwerk Mühlenberger Stollen

Show mine in Bleialf: a guided tour through an adit of the former Neue Hoffnung lead mine, led by the mining club.

Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

The Mühlenberger Stollen was driven between 1839 and 1852 for the "Neue Hoffnung" lead mine at the Heinzkyller Mühle. In 1986/87 the municipality of Bleialf reopened it together with the Bergmannsverein St. Barbara Bleialf and the Geological Institute of RWTH Aachen, and made the first passable section publicly accessible the same year. All other adits, shafts and surface facilities are closed, backfilled or demolished; a geological and mining-history educational and hiking trail links some of the sites.

The tour begins at the former portal (Mundloch), where visitors receive their equipment. An entrance structure leads into the adit. The first 20 meters are secured with timber frame supports (Türstockausbau) because the rock there is loosened; after that, the adit runs through solid rock. The guides explain geology and driving techniques: the first 400 meters were driven by hand with hammer and chisel alone, and blasting was added later. At the Mühlenberger shaft and in the ore vein, extraction, hoisting and dewatering are explained.

All tours are led by members of the mining club. After the tour, visitors can learn more at the club premises on Auwer Straße. The club describes the mine as the only lead ore show mine in the Trier administrative district and as well suited for children.
