About the museum
The Oberndorf am Neckar town museum shares the Schwedenbau with the town archive. The building is an industrial purpose-built structure of the 19th century for weapons manufacturing. The town acquired it in 1973 for cultural and administrative use and converted it for museum use in 1978.
Museum and archive together form the town's historical documentation and research center. The focus of the holdings is the more than 200-year history of local weapons technology, as it developed from 1811 at the Königlich-Württembergische Gewehrfabrik (Royal Württemberg Rifle Factory) and later at Mauser, Heckler & Koch, Rheinmetall and Feinwerkbau. The house also displays finds and documents on town history up to the 19th century; two Mauser vehicles are also on view.
