About the museum

The Alte St. Laurentiuskirche in Sulgen is the oldest surviving building in the Schramberg city area. Its former defensive tower dates back to the 13th century and was first documented in 1345. In 1435 a first nave was built, followed later by three more; the present nave with apse was built from 1826 to 1828. The church and tower are listed monuments.

The painter Albert Birkle redesigned the interior in 1932 and created, among other works, a six-meter-high crucifixion group as a fresco. After the new parish church was consecrated in 1967, the old church initially served as a storeroom. After the exterior restoration, the exhibitions were set up there between 1980 and 1986 and have been expanded since; the frescoes were restored in the 1990s.

Today the church displays 51 nativity scenes by the Schramberg nativity artist Albert Fehrenbacher in the gallery, including the "Völkerkrippe von Bethlehem" (Nativity of the Peoples of Bethlehem), which shows the birth of Jesus from the perspective of 22 countries, and a nativity scene he began while a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union. This is complemented by an exhibition on European stained glass. The Förderkreis "Alte St. Laurentiuskirche" (support group) looks after the exhibition and organizes concerts in the church.
