About the museum

On the Schafbühl northeast of Waldmössingen, the Romans established a military camp around AD 75 to secure the road link from the Rhine to the Danube via the Kinzig valley and Rottweil. During the expansion of the Limes, it was abandoned around AD 105 to 110; according to the finds, the settlement in the surroundings continued until the 3rd century.

Already in the 19th century, the plough turned up wall remains, pottery shards and coins. In 1896, an excavation by the Reichslimeskommission (Imperial Limes Commission) proved two successive fortifications; traces of a civilian settlement were added later. Another excavation in 1975 uncovered the foundations of a corner tower of the stone enclosure. The local Förderverein für Heimatpflege (heritage society) rebuilt it between 1976 and 1981; today it is a landmark of the area.

The permanent exhibition "Roman Finds in the Fort" opened in the tower on May 23, 1982. In words and pictures, it shows the role the site played in Roman times and presents finds from Waldmössingen and the nearby Brandsteig, partly as replicas, including a large iron hoard from 1980 and a lead tablet with a curse inscription.
