Museum im Stern
City museum of Warburg in one of the oldest stone houses in the city: prehistory and early history, city, economic, and art history, with free admission.
About the museum
The Museum im "Stern" is the city museum of the Hanseatic city of Warburg. It was founded in 1968; it is housed in a former medieval nobleman's courtyard in the Warburg Neustadt (New Town), which is among the oldest surviving stone houses in the city. The same building also houses the city archive with significant medieval holdings.
In 1988, the building was modernized: the attic received an exhibition and lecture room, and the entire building has since been used for museum purposes. A museum association supports the work and maintains, among other things, an art lending library (Artothek).
The permanent exhibition is divided into several departments. One focus is prehistory and early history, with a wall stone weighing tons from a tomb of the Wartberg culture, whose incised signs tell of the life of Neolithic farmers. Further areas trace the development of the twin town of Altstadt and Neustadt and the neighboring monastic territories up to 1803, as well as the transformation into the market town of the Warburger Börde in the 19th century. The art department is devoted to the copperplate engraver and goldsmith Antonius Eisenhoit and the Baroque master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun; works by Gottfried Beyer and the Kohlschein family of painters form a collection focus. Temporary exhibitions on art, archaeology, and local history round out the program.
