About the museum
The museum displays sculptures from the Goethe era, with a focus on Christian Daniel Rauch, born in Arolsen in 1777 and regarded as one of the leading masters of German Neoclassicism. A large part of the works is a selection from the sculpture holdings of the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. They are supplemented by works that show the development of German and international sculpture between classical antiquity and realism.
The collection is housed in the Baroque Marstall, planned by the master builder Franz Friedrich Rothweil opposite the palace of the Princes of Waldeck and Pyrmont. Completed in 1755, the building reveals its original function as a representative stable through the horse depictions in the gable above the entrance.
The house is a cooperation between the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art and the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, and is organized by Museum Bad Arolsen in cooperation with the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Nationalgalerie. Since 2012, contemporary artists have placed their own works in changing "interventions" in dialogue with the classical collection. Museum Bad Arolsen also includes Rauch's birthplace, the Kaulbach House, the Schreibersche Haus and exhibition rooms in the palace.
