About the museum
The Friedrichshagen waterworks was built between 1889 and 1899 to plans by Henry Gill and went into operation in 1893 as the Wasserwerk Müggelsee. The brick superstructures in the Brandenburg brick style were designed by Richard Schultze. At the time, the plant was considered the largest and most modern waterworks in Europe; the listed site covers around 55 hectares.
In a decommissioned part of the works, the museum was set up in 1987 for Berlin's 750th anniversary. It collects and shows historical evidence of Berlin's water supply and sewage disposal. The exhibition rooms include the old boiler house and Machine Hall B, whose steam engines from the late 19th century are especially worth seeing. The permanent exhibition "Wasser für Berlin" is complemented by an outdoor area with exhibits.
Between 2014 and 2018 the association Berliner Unterwelten ran the museum; since 2019 it has again been run by the Berliner Wasserbetriebe. Visits are now possible only by appointment through their works tours. Because of its acoustics, the machine hall is also a popular event venue.
