About the museum

The Museum Köpenick goes back to the “home school museums” (Heimatschulmuseen) that emerged in the late 1920s: a first exhibition took place at the Körner School in 1926, and in 1930 the Heimatschulmuseum Cöpenick opened on Glienicker Straße. During the Second World War, the collection was almost entirely lost. In the GDR, a Local History Cabinet (Heimatgeschichtliches Kabinett) for the district was set up in 1966; from 1967 it was housed in the attic of Köpenick Palace and later moved to Kietzer Straße and Elcknerplatz.

In 1991 the museum moved into a half-timbered house at Alter Markt 1, first mentioned in 1665. It was built as a residence and estate house for the Heidereiter Peter Bock, later briefly served as a brewery, and after the town bought it in 1857 was used as a school, a childcare facility, and a poorhouse. In 1992 the Heimatmuseum (local history museum) opened there; after conservation-compliant building work between 1995 and 1999, the current permanent exhibition was inaugurated in 1999.

It presents the history from its beginnings to the present in chronological order, with emphasis on prehistory and early history, fishing, laundering, and industrial history. Above the exhibition rooms are the district archives of Treptow-Köpenick and a reading library.
