About the museum

The thatched half-timbered house on the village green is considered the oldest surviving farmhouse in the protected area of the Angerdorf (green village) Kleinschönebeck. It was built around the middle of the 18th century as a combined dwelling and stable house and was converted about half a century later into a double-parlor house. Typical of the farmhouses in the eastern part of the Mark Brandenburg is the open black kitchen (Schwarze Küche) in the middle of the house, which has been preserved here.

At the beginning of the 1980s the building was badly dilapidated. Between 1981 and 1984, volunteer local history enthusiasts – at that time a working group for local chronicle and monument preservation in the Kulturbund der DDR – completely dismantled the house and rebuilt it. In October 1984 they opened a local history museum in it, which the association Heimatfreunde Schöneiche has run to this day.

The furnishings show how a full-time farming family lived and worked around 1800: with historic furniture, farm equipment, clothing, and household items. The ensemble includes a historic bread oven; each year the Heimathaus is the focus of the Schöneicher Heimatfest. At the same time the house serves as a small tourist information office and advance ticket outlet for concerts in the municipality.
