About the museum
After fourteen years in exile, the writer Anna Seghers returned to Berlin in 1947 and lived in Adlershof from 1950. In 1955 she moved with her husband László Radványi to the upper floor of a newly built three-story apartment building at what was then Volkswohlstraße 81. She lived there until her death in 1983, including while serving as president of the GDR writers' association, and deliberately kept this modest apartment rather than moving to a representative villa.
After her death, her living and working rooms became a museum, open to the public since 1985 and cared for by the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts). The street has borne her name since 1984.
The rooms are preserved in their original condition: furniture, travel souvenirs from around the world, a collection of stones and sea snails, and ceramics and musical instruments from Mexico. The library, with around 10,000 volumes spread across four rooms and the hallway, is particularly impressive. A small display case exhibition shows photos, documents and first editions of her books, and original recordings let you hear her voice.
