The station building was erected in 1893 on the line from Düsseldorf via Mönchengladbach to Aachen, which had opened in 1853. When rail service on the line was given up in favor of the S 8 rapid transit line and the railway wanted to demolish the building, the town bought it in 1988 at the urging of the young Heimatverein and placed it under monument protection.
Since 1989 the Old Station has housed a local history museum, which the Heimatverein set up under the direction of Karl Reichartz through painstaking work and still runs today; the town has taken on patronage. After the lease for the station restaurant had expired, the building was converted with funding from, among others, the NRW-Stiftung and the Landschaftsverband Rheinland, and it reopened on August 28, 2005, as the Kulturbahnhof (cultural station).
The permanent exhibition in the left-hand part of the building covers the history of the town and the station on three floors, with station and railway staff equipment, rural living rooms, small farm implements, children's toys and craft tools. In addition, there are changing exhibitions. The right-hand part, the former restaurant, hosts lectures, readings, cabaret and civil wedding ceremonies.
