About the museum
Rheydt Castle is considered the only fully preserved Renaissance castle complex on the Lower Rhine. The architecture visible today took shape under the Bylandt family, who lived here until 1794. Ramparts, bastions and walkable casemates show the character of a generously planned fortification.
The city museum has been housed in the complex since 1922. The collections cover Renaissance and Baroque art and decorative arts, the building and use history of the castle, and the history of the textile city of Mönchengladbach, with around 20,000 objects in the city history holdings alone. The textile technology is shown as a separate part of the collection in the Textiltechnikum in the Monforts Quartier.
At present, the museum shows a new exhibition in the Herrenhaus (manor house). The permanent city history exhibition in the Vorburg (outer bailey) is closed until further notice due to ongoing maintenance work. A free app with audio and augmented reality tours, as well as a children's tour, adds depth to the visit. The museum team offers open and bookable guided tours, programs for schools and daycare centers, children's birthday parties, and evening formats such as "ApéroArt".
