Museum KulturLand Ries
Regional museum of the Swabia district in the former Maihingen monastery on everyday culture and agriculture in the Nördlinger Ries.
About the museum
The museum uses farm buildings of Maihingen Monastery, founded in 1472, which passed to the House of Oettingen-Wallerstein after secularization in 1802/03. Beer was brewed in the brewhouse until 1935, after which it fell into disrepair. From the late 1960s, the Nördlingen agricultural school and the Maihingen farmer Franz Zekl collected farm equipment; in 1973 the association Rieser Bauernmuseum was founded and renovated the brewhouse until 1984.
The Rieser Bauernmuseum opened in 1984, and a year later the Swabia district took over as operator, with the Donau-Ries district contributing to the costs. It was one of three district museums planned under the Swabian museum program of 1980. In 1989 the district acquired the monastery farm buildings and opened the exhibition on the transformation of Ries agriculture there in 1998.
After the conversion of the brewhouse, the permanent exhibition "300 Jahre Alltagskultur im Ries" (300 Years of Everyday Culture in the Ries) opened in 2015 on four floors; at the same time the museum received its present name. On about 2,200 square meters, it shows living, clothing, consumption, medicine, and childhood as well as agriculture between 1800 and 1950. A museum garden with a bee garden, a museum field, and festivals such as the Harvest Festival (Schnitterfest) and Potato Festival complement the offering; in the neighboring monastery mill, the friends' association KulturLand Ries runs a mill museum.
