About the museum
The museum goes back to the art collection of Cornelius Wilhelm and Sophie von Heyl, who from 1867 gathered paintings, sculptures, drawings, and decorative arts such as glass and ceramics. The collection hung in the family's villa, built in 1884.
After Sophie von Heyl's death in 1915, the family decided to keep the residence as a public foundation; the statutes are dated May 14, 1920. Under curator Georg Swarzenski, the Heylshof became a museum and opened on June 23, 1926.
During air raids in February and March 1945, the building was almost completely destroyed, and the collection remained in storage until 1959. To finance the reconstruction, the foundation sold two paintings by Frans Hals. Since the reopening on May 19, 1961, the collection has again been shown in its domestic setting.
