Heimatmuseum Worms-Abenheim
Small local history museum in the old schoolhouse of Worms-Abenheim covering six millennia of local history, from Stone Age finds to the present.
About the museum
The local history museum is housed on the upper floor of the old Abenheim schoolhouse, a simple Neoclassical plastered building from the 1820s opposite the Baroque parish church of St. Bonifatius. The listed building served as a school with four classrooms and a teacher's apartment until 1966. It then passed to the Heimatverein Abenheim (local history association), founded in 1953, which renovated it and opened the museum in 1968. The ground floor serves as a meeting room.
On around 50 square meters, the permanent exhibition traces the history of today's Worms district over about 6,000 years. Archaeological finds range from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age, Hallstatt and La Tène periods to the Romans and Franks; a photo sequence of an excavation by the Museum der Stadt Worms explains the work of archaeologists.
For the Middle Ages and modern times, the focus is on Abenheim's long affiliation with Fulda Abbey, the rule of the Dalbergs and the Catholic-conservative character of the village that grew out of it, whose consequences during the Nazi era are also examined. In a second room, the association shows changing exhibitions on local and regional history, during which coffee and cake are offered on the ground floor or in the former schoolyard.
