About the museum
The Museum of Modern Electronic Music grew out of an initiative from Frankfurt's club scene; its founding director is the former DJ and club owner Alex Azary, and it is run by a nonprofit friends' association whose board includes the techno pioneer Talla 2XLC. The city of Frankfurt provides the premises on the intermediate level of the Hauptwache, the former Kindermuseum (children's museum), free of charge.
MOMEM opened on April 6, 2022, with a big party on the square at the Hauptwache featuring DJ Sven Väth. The first special exhibition was devoted to Väth's career and his extensive record collection. It was followed by exhibitions on Tangerine Dream, the Nature One festival and the legendary Frankfurt club OMEN, among others.
The core of the permanent exhibition is "Milestones", featuring the personal favorite tracks of numerous DJs from several continents, which visitors can listen to themselves on turntables. Expanded with a record store, a photo gallery on Frankfurt's club history and a room with historic studio equipment, the museum also sees itself as a venue for DJ nights, workshops and conferences. Its operations and program are funded largely through admission, sponsorship and donations.
