About the museum

Frankfurt citizens founded the Kunstverein (art association) in 1829 to promote the visual arts and art appreciation in the trading city and to acquire works for the public. Its initiators included the future mayor Johann Gerhard Christian Thomas and the art historian Johann David Passavant. After financial difficulties, the association was reorganized in the mid-19th century.

Its first own exhibition building on Junghofstraße, dating from 1861, was lost in the bombing of 1944. After years in temporary premises on the Eschenheimer Anlage, the Kunstverein moved in 1962 into the rebuilt Steinernes Haus am Markt, a late Gothic patrician house between the cathedral and the Römerberg. A cubic extension on the neighboring plot enlarged the exhibition space to about 900 square meters; the ensemble is now a listed historic monument.

The association has no collection of its own; instead it shows changing exhibitions on contemporary art and social issues, often combined across disciplines with science and technology, along with performances, talks, and lectures. Franziska Nori has directed the Kunstverein since 2014. The recurring series “And This Is Us” gives young artists from Frankfurt a platform. The Kunstverein has more than 1,000 members.
