About the museum
The sponsoring association was founded in 1979 as the Förderkreis Heimatmuseum (local history museum support group); the Heimatmuseum Reichenau opened in 1982. The association built up the museum and still runs it on a volunteer basis today. In 1999 it received its current name, Museum Reichenau.
The museum is located in the center of the island at the Ergat. Civic history is housed in a half-timbered house that is said to be one of the oldest in southern Germany; it was formerly the seat of the monastery's administrator and the town hall of the citizens' community. Next to it stands a bakehouse built in 1788, which the association rescued in 1985/87 and moved here.
With the opening of the new museum buildings in 2007, an exhibition on monastery history was added. It covers the monastery founded in 724, the Reichenau writing and painting school, the St. Gall monastery plan, and scholars such as Walahfrid Strabo and Hermann the Lame. Two further small museums at the Romanesque churches of St. George in Oberzell and St. Peter and Paul in Niederzell complete the offering.
