About the museum
Today's Zentrum für Psychiatrie Reichenau opened in 1913 as the “Großherzoglich Badische Heil- und Pflegeanstalt bei Konstanz” (Grand Ducal Baden Mental Hospital near Konstanz). For the clinic's centenary in 2013 it set up a museum room to document the institution's eventful history and to inform visitors about mental health and illness and treatment options.
The exhibition is housed in the clinic's former chapel. On display are medical instruments, clothing worn by doctors, nursing staff and patients, everyday objects, photographs and eyewitness accounts. Old spindles and a loom recall the earlier occupational therapy. A smaller room is devoted to the murder of people with mental illness at Schloss Grafeneck during the Nazi era.
The museum room is looked after by the clinic itself and can be visited by arrangement; it is currently closed due to renovation work.
