About the museum
Schloss Friedrichsfelde was built in 1684/85 for Benjamin Raule, the Electoral Brandenburg naval director, as a pleasure palace in what was then Rosenfelde. After his fall it passed into other hands: in 1719 the Margraves of Brandenburg-Schwedt had it expanded to its present size. Later residents included Prince August Ferdinand of Prussia, whose son Louis Ferdinand was born in the palace in 1772, the Dukes of Courland, and Katharina von Holstein-Beck. From 1816 to 1945 the estate belonged to the von Treskow family; Peter Joseph Lenné laid out the park during this period.
In 1945 Soviet troops looted the palace, after which it fell into decay. Only with the founding of the Tierpark Berlin in 1954/55 by Heinrich Dathe was it possible to secure the building; the restoration, begun in 1967, ended with the reopening on June 11, 1981. Since 2009 the Förderverein der Berliner Tiergärten (Friends of the Berlin Zoos) has looked after its museum operations.
Inside, historic wall hangings and paintings can be seen. In the history room of the east wing, an exhibition tells the nearly 400-year history of the palace; on the ground floor, the focus is on the history of the Berlin zoological gardens. The Classicist festival hall is used for concerts and celebrations.
