About the museum
The museum has its roots in a local group of the Saxon Folklore Association (Verein für Sächsische Volkskunde), which from 1898 built a local heritage collection in Radeberg. After World War II, which caused losses to the collection, a municipal local history museum was established; since 1993 it has been housed in the castle under the name Museum Schloss Klippenstein.
The castle goes back to a medieval fortress from the 13th century, built on a rocky cliff above the Röder. In the 16th century it was expanded into an electoral hunting lodge; later the complex served as an administrative seat and, from 1856 to 1945, as a district court. During the GDR period it had many uses; since 1990 it has been associated with restoration and cultural use.
The permanent exhibitions cover the history of the castle, the town of Radeberg, industry from furniture and glass manufacturing to television and computer technology, administrative history, and the archaeology of the region. A historical cooperage is set up in the castle courtyard. The castle garden with its owl tower is part of the visit.
