The exhibition commemorates the twinning of Lübben and Neunkirchen, begun in 1986, one of the early German-German partnerships, and also looks at surveillance by the Stasi.
About the museum
As early as 1906, a municipal collection of antiquities was established in Lübben, forming the core of the first museum. That building was almost completely lost in World War II. After around 30 years without a museum, citizens called for its re-establishment during the political upheaval of 1989; in 1999 the town council decided on a new start, and in 2001 the museum reopened in the castle.
The castle itself has medieval roots; its present form with Renaissance elements dates from between 1569 and 1682. A powerful defensive tower with walls up to 2.5 metres thick dominates the building. Inside the tower is the coat-of-arms hall, with a large wall painting by August Oetken and 114 coat-of-arms shields.
Today the museum shows finds relating to Lübben and Lower Lusatia, the Lübben Wunderkammer, well-known personalities of the town, Lower Sorbian costumes and paintings, some with interactive media and hands-on stations. The collection comprises over 21,000 objects; more than 100 special exhibitions have so far covered regional themes, from Spreewald culture to sports history.
