About the museum
The Viechtach section of the Bayerischer Wald-Verein (Bavarian Forest Association) acquired the property on Regerstraße in 1992 to set up a museum there. The house has been documented since the 17th century and was first mentioned in records in 1680. From about 1860 to the early 20th century, eight generations of blacksmiths lived and worked there.
Because parts of the old smithy had long been unused and the former agricultural buildings could not be saved, the house was comprehensively renovated and a new building was added. Under the leadership of the long-time section chairman Helmut Grotz and with great volunteer effort from the association members, the museum opened in 1999.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to linen, to the townscape of Viechtach in historical photographs, and to religious folk art. The museum is still run by volunteers today.
