The Museum zur Stadtgeschichte presents the history of the former residence and district town of Neustadt am Rübenberge and of the Neustädter Land with its 33 villages. It is run by the Museumsverein Neustädter Land e. V., founded in 1992, which keeps the museum going through volunteer work, membership fees and donations.
The collection is housed in a half-timbered building from the mid-18th century, next to the Liebfrauenkirche in the town center. The building itself is part of the visit.
The permanent exhibition traces the story from early settlement in the Stone Age through the early Middle Ages and the town's development up to the 19th century. Sections are devoted to traditional crafts such as cooperage and indigo block printing (Blaudruck), the Leine river in the region, school history and postal history. Furniture, household items, textiles, clothing and tools show rural everyday life; in addition, there are personal belongings of General Gerhard von Scharnhorst from around 1800.
Admission is free.
