About the museum
Shaft Weser was sunk from 1910, when a potash deposit worth mining was to be opened up in Altenhagen. The hopes for "white gold" did not last long: the salt at a depth of about 500 meters was of too poor a quality. The neighboring Sigmundshall alkali works in Bokeloh took over the shaft and has used it since 1928 as a ventilation shaft to improve the airflow in its mine.
A small mining museum has been housed in the gatehouse of the ventilation shaft since 1997, run by the Bergmannsverein Hagenburg (miners' association). Historical mining exhibits and maps explain the extraction and processing of raw materials and ores in the region. On show are minerals and rocks, replicas of haulage roadways from potash and hard coal mining, mining lamps and miners' traditional costumes from various periods. Former miners guide visitors through the exhibition and talk about their work underground.
