About the museum

Passenger service on the Meppen–Haselünne Railway ended in 1970. Two years earlier, the railway's last steam locomotive had been scrapped, while freight continued with diesel locomotives. Railway enthusiasts joined forces to offer trips with historical vehicles again, initially using a railcar among other things. Their declared goal, however, was a steam train.

That goal was achieved in 1988: the association Eisenbahnfreunde Hasetal Haselünne acquired the steam locomotive NIEDERSACHSEN, a Henschel tender locomotive of the "Bismarck" class from 1922, which had previously served at the Hattingen power station and then with the Dampfeisenbahn Weserbergland, together with five coaches. The train was moved to Haselünne and restored to working order. Historical passenger trains have been running here again for over 30 years.

Operations are carried out by volunteer association members, supported by Hasetal Touristik GmbH in Löningen. The summer season traditionally begins on May 1 and ends in October; theme trips and St. Nicholas trips are added in winter. The saloon car serves Emsland specialties and drinks. The association's site is the engine shed in Haselünne, where the vehicles are maintained.
