About the museum

In 1979 private owners of historic sailing ships joined forces to form the Museumshafen Flensburg association. Using their own funds, they restored the old wooden Bohlwerk (plank quay) on the Schiffbrücke and began collecting sailing workboats used in coastal and inshore trade. As early as 1980 the association held the first Rum-Regatta, now considered the largest gaff-rigger gathering in northern Europe.

In the mid-1980s the concept for a historic harbor with a crane, shipyard and exhibition areas was developed. As a landmark, the association had a replica built of the harbor crane that Flensburg skippers used to step masts from 1726 and that stood at the harbor until 1889; the replica was inaugurated in 1991 and rebuilt to the historic model in 2016.

Today around 18 ships are moored at the Bohlwerk, including Haikutter (shark cutters), herring luggers, Danish jagts and Norwegian sjekte boats, the oldest dating from the mid-19th century. In the Lüttfischerhafen (small-fishermen's harbor), the association displays its collection of small workboats. The owners keep the ships seaworthy, and they sail at the Rum-Regatta, Apfelfahrt and Grogtörn. The Museumshafen works closely with the Schifffahrtsmuseum (maritime museum) and the Historischer Hafen Flensburg gGmbH.
