About the museum

The Museumswerft (museum shipyard) was founded at Flensburg harbor in 1996. After several moves, it found its permanent home in 2001 on the Schiffbrücke opposite the Schifffahrtsmuseum and has been part of the Historic Harbor ensemble ever since. It is run by a nonprofit company with support from a friends' association.

The focus is on traditional wooden boatbuilding: following historic plans and using traditional techniques, the yard builds replicas and restores cargo sailing vessels and open workboats of the kind used in the Baltic Sea region 100 to 200 years ago. Visitors can watch the shipyard at work. Projects include the Tosmakke-Jolle (a Danish type of open boat) “Eurydike”, completed in 2009 and now used for harbor tours, and a replica of an ancient fishing boat for the Bibelzentrum Schleswig.

Besides boatbuilding, the shipyard teaches how to use historic tools, involves young people in building projects and offers boatbuilding for children's groups. It also provides repairs, advice and expert reports for historic watercraft, and there is a shipyard café on site.
