Museumsschule Hiddenhausen
Prussian village school from 1847 in Hiddenhausen-Schweicheln with a classroom, teacher's residence, school garden, granary, and tenant farmer's cottage.
About the museum
The Museumsschule is located in a one-room schoolhouse from 1847 in the Schweicheln-Bermbeck district of Hiddenhausen, built as a typical Prussian rural school of Westphalia. After school operations ended in the early 20th century, the building served other purposes and was later threatened with demolition. A sponsoring association campaigned for its preservation, had the building restored with funding from the NRW-Stiftung, and opened the museum in 2001.
Under one roof, the house shows teaching and everyday life in the 19th century: a classroom with benches, slate boards, and teaching aids, as well as the teacher's residence with a Deele (threshing floor). The grounds include a kitchen garden laid out on a historical model, a half-timbered granary built around 1800 that was moved here from Löhne in 2004 and now serves as a coffee room, and a restored tenant farmer's cottage in the neighborhood that illustrates the living conditions of the schoolchildren's families.
The association, which works on a volunteer basis, conveys school history mainly through reenacted historical school lessons for classes and groups. The classroom is also a wedding venue of the Hiddenhausen registry office.
