Museum der Stadt Löhne
Municipal museum in Löhne-Gohfeld: town history from the Ice Age and dugout canoe to the cigar and furniture industries, free admission.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1984 as a local history museum on the initiative of the Löhner Heimatverein and moved into a former school building on Alter Postweg. In the following years it grew with historic buildings on the outdoor grounds: in 1992, a cigar maker's house from 1871 was rebuilt from Obernbeck, and in 1995 a half-timbered storehouse from 1808 was added.
Since 2004, the museum has been run by the town of Löhne as a museum with a full-time director. In 2022 it was given the name "Museum der Stadt Löhne."
In nine themed rooms, the permanent exhibition tells the development of Löhne up to the town's founding in 1969. In the basement are Ice Age finds such as mammoth and cave bear bones, followed by pieces from the Neolithic and Bronze Age as well as a dugout canoe about 7.7 meters long from the 6th century. Further rooms deal with rural life, blue dyeing and weaving, cigar making, woodworking up to the kitchen furniture industry, historic photographs, and the railroad.
