About the museum
The Neues Schloss in Bad Muskau is first mentioned in 1245. In the 17th century it was converted into a Baroque three-winged complex, and in the 1860s it was decorated with Neo-Renaissance elements. Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, who was born in Muskau, made the area around the castle the heart of his famous landscape park. At the end of the Second World War the building was gutted by arson.
From 1996 to 2013 the castle was gradually rebuilt with funds from the federal and state governments. Today the foundation "Fürst-Pückler-Park Bad Muskau," a special fund of the Free State of Saxony, runs the house, which is part of the Muskau Park added to the World Heritage List in 2004. The tourism center in the west wing is the starting point for park tours.
In the castle, the multimedia permanent exhibition "Pückler! Pückler? Einfach nicht zu fassen!" presents the many facets of the prince, as traveler, writer, dandy and garden artist. In the castle tower, another permanent exhibition tells the story of the town of Muskau, and the tower itself serves as a viewing platform. In addition there are special exhibitions, the Ananasausstellung (pineapple exhibition) in the Schlossgärtnerei (castle gardener's house), and a café in the building.
