About the museum

The Counts of Montfort, a noble family documented since the 12th century, had a new residence built in Tettnang from the early 18th century. The patron was Count Anton III, and the plans came from the monastery architect Christoph Gessinger; the building rose on the site of an older castle destroyed in 1633, and construction stalled in 1728.

In 1753 a devastating fire destroyed large parts of the palace. Count Franz Xaver had it rebuilt, bringing in leading artists of the region, including the sculptor Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer; in 1758 Franz Martin Kuen painted the ceiling fresco in the dining hall. The decor combines Baroque, Rococo and early Neoclassicism. The costs, however, contributed to the family's financial ruin: in 1779 the count abdicated, and the lordship passed to Austria and later, via Bavaria, to Württemberg.

In the 19th and 20th centuries the palace housed various authorities, including the Oberamt (district administration) and the district court. After extensive restoration, the state rooms on the second floor are open as a palace museum. Today the Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Baden-Württemberg (State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg) manage the site; on view are the counts' living rooms and bedrooms, guest apartments, the Bacchus Hall, the Green Cabinet and the palace chapel.
