About the museum

Heinrich XV of Reuss-Lobenstein had the Neues Schloss (New Palace) built in the Baroque style outside the town walls between 1714 and 1718, after a fire had partially destroyed the older palace from 1601. The complex consists of two square wing buildings connected by a lower central section; a pavilion was added in the garden around the middle of the 18th century.

The palace served as the residence of the princes of the Lobenstein line until 1824, after which the territory passed to Reuss-Ebersdorf. Several fires in the 18th and 19th centuries damaged the building, which was restored each time and later used for various public purposes.

In the 1990s the palace, park and outbuildings underwent extensive renovation, followed by the west wing from 2008. Today the town of Bad Lobenstein runs the building as an exhibition venue: rooms on the upper floor house permanent exhibitions on the history of the Principality of Reuss and its coinage and on the Lobenstein pharmacy, while two further rooms host temporary exhibitions. The restored banquet hall and two salons with Neoclassical stucco are used for concerts, readings and weddings.
