About the museum

As early as the 1930s, citizens of Regen began collecting objects for a future local history museum. A first attempt in the attic of the town hall failed in 1966 for lack of space and because of climate problems. When the district office moved to the edge of town in 1984, the city took up the idea again and used the vacated building from 1913, a neo-Baroque, Art Nouveau-style double-wing building next to the town hall.

After three years of planning and conversion, the Niederbayerisches Landwirtschaftsmuseum (Lower Bavarian Agricultural Museum) opened in 1988. Since 1993 the town's tourist information has also been housed in the building. A central depot with a conservation unit was created in 2001 for the growing collection.

The permanent exhibition runs over three floors through the agrarian history of the 18th to early 20th century: from life under landlords around 1800, through household, side income, soil cultivation and harvest, to peasant emancipation, reforms and mechanization. The museum also owns roadworthy historical steam technology, which a volunteer steam crew maintains and demonstrates.
