Norddeutsches Krippenmuseum

Nativity scene museum in the Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Güstrow, with Christmas nativity scenes from around the world set in a brick Gothic church.

Opening hoursAdmission €4.50

About the museum

Since December 2007 the museum has presented Christmas nativity scenes from many countries in a permanent exhibition. It is based on the collection of Mechthild Ringguth from Hamburg, who spent four decades gathering nativity scenes from every continent. Many of them are commissioned works by local artists who used the materials and forms of their homelands. Later, other collections were donated.

The exhibition is housed in the Heilig-Geist-Kirche (Church of the Holy Spirit), a brick Gothic building first mentioned in 1308 as a hospital foundation. From 1524 the church was used for services; later it served as the chapel of the state workhouse (Landesarbeitshaus) in Güstrow Castle, and then as a parish chapel, until it had to close in 1973 due to structural dilapidation.

After reunification, the building was renovated from 2005 to 2007 and prepared for the nativity exhibition. The museum is run by the Weihnachtskrippen in Heilig Geist foundation of the Ringguth family. It continues nativity exhibitions that have been held in Güstrow since 1993.
