Oberfränkisches Bauernhofmuseum Kleinlosnitz

Open-air museum around the thatched Dietelhof from the late 18th century – rural life in the Hofer Land near the Waldstein.

Opening hoursAdmission from €4 Partially accessible Café

About the museum

The museum's starting point is the Dietelhof in Kleinlosnitz, a thatched four-sided farmstead from the late 18th century that had been uninhabited since 1968. Hof house researcher Karl Bedal had documented it in detail during the lifetime of the last resident. The Verein Oberfränkisches Bauernhofmuseum acquired the property in 1974, renovated it and opened it to the public for the first time in 1983.

In 1978, the neighboring farm complex of the Dietel family, who had lived in the village for centuries, was added. In the following decades, further buildings were relocated to the grounds, including in 1990 a craftsman's house from Saalenstein from 1785 and a flax-breaking house. In 2000 the grounds were expanded, and in 2006 a new entrance building with an exhibition hall followed.

With its fully preserved furnishings – from the cellar with its black kitchen to the pointed attic and the beehouse – the Dietelhof is considered one of the most valuable rural architectural monuments in Upper Franconia. Its history is documented by an unusually large number of records, which now lie in the Dietelarchiv with over 2000 items in the cellar of the entrance building.

Today the museum is run by a special-purpose association of municipalities. The program includes craft demonstrations such as thatching, a farmhouse garden, festivals in the farm courtyard and the annual BauernHofKino (farm cinema).
