Obervogtländisches Dorfmuseum Erlbach

Village museum in an 18th-century craftsman's house, with workshops of the musical instrument trade and the local history of Erlbach in the Vogtland.

About the museum

The museum is housed in a craftsman's house built in 1680, after the Thirty Years' War, on a plot cut off from a farmstead. A beam in the right-hand Wohnblockstube (living room) was dated to 1734. The building is a good example of Vogtland timber construction and is a listed monument. For centuries craftspeople lived here, most recently a bow maker and a shoemaker.

The exhibition goes back to a Heimatstube (local heritage room) set up in 1975 by the Kulturbund Erlbach. When the building fell into disrepair, the room had to close. From 1987 the building was restored in line with historic preservation requirements, and on October 3, 1991, the museum reopened under its current name.

On display are workshops of the musical instrument trade, for example for bow makers, gut string finishers and clarinet makers, along with the living room of an instrument maker around 1900. Further rooms cover village crafts such as bakers, coopers and blacksmiths, lighting, breweries and the former gasworks. Under the roof, a walk through local history includes remains from the Erlbach salt mine. Over 100 short texts accompany the exhibition.
