About the museum
The open-air museum was founded in 1992 in the Eubabrunn district of Markneukirchen and has been open to visitors since November 1995. It is dedicated to the rural culture of the southern Vogtland, above all farming and the trades connected with it. It is run by Vogtland Kultur GmbH of Reichenbach, and since 2002 a friends’ association has supported it. Since 2019 it has formed a museum network with the Freilichtmuseum Landwüst.
On the spacious grounds in the Hennebach valley, typical buildings from the region have been carefully dismantled elsewhere and reassembled here, step by step. None of the roughly 18 buildings originally stood on this site. Residential houses, barns and stables from the period 1720 to the 1930s stand as farmstead groups spread across the site. Their furnishings date from shortly before and after electrification.
Thematic exhibitions cover, among other things, the wheelwright’s trade, journeyman’s travels (Wanderschaft), farm furniture and sheep farming. In the largest farmyard is a kind of cultural center with the “Grünes Tal” restaurant, an event barn and a carriage shed for special exhibitions. Display fields, gardens and old heritage livestock breeds are also part of the museum. An annual program of festivals and demonstrations of traditional crafts complements the offer.
