Vogtländisches Freilichtmuseum Landwüst

Open-air museum with four historic farmsteads in Landwüst showing the life and work of Vogtland farming families since the 18th century.

Opening hoursAdmission from €8 Partially accessible

About the museum

It began with a farmer's passion for collecting: Walter Wunderlich of Landwüst took over the village chronicle in 1957 and began collecting old tools and everyday objects that had become redundant through the collectivization of agriculture and were at risk of decaying in attics and barns. On July 16, 1961, a rural local history museum opened in the village's former Konsum store, the first of its kind in the then district of Karl-Marx-Stadt.

The collection grew so quickly that around 1967 an Egerland farmhouse from 1782 was placed under heritage protection and prepared for museum use. In 1968, the Bauernmuseum Landwüst opened in it. From the 1970s, the present open-air grounds emerged step by step around this core.

On about 2.5 hectares, around 20 buildings now form four farmsteads with combined residential and stable houses, barns, and carriage sheds; many still stand in their original location. In addition there are a livestock scale, a bakehouse and a beehouse, and a barn for exhibitions and events. The collection covers agriculture, farm machinery, beekeeping, furniture, household goods, and crafts from the late 18th to the mid-20th century; typical farm animals and plants bring rural life to life. The operator is Vogtland Kultur GmbH, which runs a second museum site in neighboring Eubabrunn.
