About the museum

The collection of Classical Archaeology at Saarland University came into being around 1970. Its foundation was a small private collection, which later grew through regular acquisitions. It was set up as a working tool for teaching: students should be able to view ancient objects directly.

The holdings consist of originals and plaster casts. The originals are mainly minor arts from all periods, from the Mycenaean era to late antiquity, including ceramics, terracottas, lamps and glass vessels, as well as jewelry, mirrors and implements made of precious metal and ivory. The casts focus on Greek sculpture and Roman portraits; replicas of ancient bronzes and early Christian diptychs form another focus.

The collection is also open to interested members of the public and is currently being digitized step by step as part of courses.
