About the museum

The Museum St. Arnual is run by the Heimatverein St. Arnual (local history association) and opened in December 1998. It uses the first floor and the vaulted cellar of a listed building on Augustinerstraße, only a few steps from the collegiate church. As the only local history museum in Saarbrücken's inner city, it also sees itself as a meeting place for people in the district.

The building dates from the 16th century and, until the dissolution of the collegiate foundation in 1569, was part of the living quarters of the canons; two load-bearing ceiling beams from that time have been preserved. It was later converted into the residential and farm complex of the foundation's steward's office, and examinations of the roof structure point to work carried out in 1729 and 1730. In the 20th century the building served, among other things, as part of the airport restaurant, as an inn, and as accommodation for the Technisches Hilfswerk (Federal Agency for Technical Relief).

The exhibition is spread across three levels and organized by theme. On view are, for example, the preserved clockwork of the collegiate church, ceramic shards from excavations dating from the 6th to the 19th century, fragments of gravestones, and tools from crafts and agriculture. An archive with documents, photos, and maps is open for your own research; the history of the former St. Arnual airport, which lay in the neighborhood until the 1950s, attracts particular interest. The museum also shows sketches for animated films by the Oscar-winning Frédéric Back, who was born in St. Arnual, and offers regional artists space for exhibitions.
